Environmental Game – “12 Spoon Activity” on Resource Conservation

To raise awareness on water and energy conservation, EPCO Bhopal, the Implementing Agency for Madhya Pradesh under the Environment Education Programme (EEP), organized an innovative environmental game called “12 Spoon Activity” , as part of the World Environment Day celebrations.

Aligned with the core themes of Mission LiFE, the activity aimed to demonstrate how significant resource losses—especially water and energy—occur during transmission from the source to the end user. These losses, though often unnoticed, can be substantial. For instance, water can be lost through evaporation, leakage, or seepage from canals and pipelines, while energy loss may occur when devices remain on standby mode, such as being switched off only with a remote.

The game involved 12 spoons, a cup, a 50 ml beaker, and 14 participants. Water was passed spoon-to-spoon from the first to the twelfth student, simulating the journey of a resource through a distribution system. At the end, the remaining water was measured. Predictably, some of the water was lost during the process—visibly spilled on the ground—symbolizing real-world wastage.

Around 55 Eco-club school and college students, along with their teachers, actively participated. The hands-on nature of the game made the learning experience engaging and impactful.

Through this simple yet powerful activity, participants clearly understood that resource losses are common but preventable. The session emphasized the importance of efficient resource management, behavioral changes, and the need for every individual to act responsibly for a sustainable future.
