Action Towards Ending Plastic Pollution by Sikkim Eco-Clubs under Environment Education Programme

In a spirited celebration of World Environment Day 2025, over 500 school Eco-Clubs in Sikkim took center stage in the fight against plastic pollution. Under the aegis of the Environment Education Programme (EEP) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Sikkim’s Forest and Environment Department, acting as the State Implementing Agency, mobilized more than 15,000 students from May 22 to June 5, 2025.

Aligned with the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution”, the initiative saw eco-club members across the state actively participate in an impressive range of awareness and action-based activities. These included Mission LiFE pledge-taking ceremonies, the Zero Waste Himalaya clean-up drive, waste segregation and brand audits, and impactful community and digital campaigns using hashtags like #BreakFreeFromPlastic and #PlasticFreedomChallenge.

Students creatively reused waste materials to make decorative and usable items, participated in tree plantation 2.0 under “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, climate marches, painting and quiz competitions, webinars, role-plays, and special assemblies—all aimed at fostering environmental responsibility. A two-day orientation programme for 80 Eco-Club educators further strengthened the knowledge base and capacity of school coordinators across Sikkim.

The campaign culminated on June 5, World Environment Day, with simultaneous events held at school, constituency, district, and state levels. The state-level event, organized at Deorali, witnessed enthusiastic participation from 300 students of Government Girls' Senior Secondary School Deorali and Nar Bahadur Bhandari Government College Tadong.

In a symbolic gesture of commitment, students joined dignitaries in a climate march, a clean-up drive near Deorali Monastery and the NIT campus, and a waste and brand audit. The highlight of the celebration was the felicitation of Rumtek Senior Secondary School, which received the prestigious Best Eco-Club Award from MoEF&CC. The award was ceremoniously handed over by Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim Shri Om Prakash Mathur, in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang, cabinet ministers, and other dignitaries. The State Government also conferred a Rs. 2 lakh cash token to the awardee school in recognition of their exemplary work.

This massive youth-driven campaign reaffirms the power of grassroots engagement in addressing pressing environmental challenges and echoes the Mission LiFE vision of nurturing responsible, sustainable lifestyles.
